How Shapes Grew
Sam Lane knew that salon ownership was the "shape of things to come" for her. Many years as a successful salon hairstylist and manager, as well as her desire to control her future, made the decision to open her own business an easy one.
1979
Sam opens her first Shapes salon—with six stations and nine employees—on King Street in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
1985
Though Shapes gains positive momentum through the mid-80s, Sam realizes she needs to sell her business in order to spend more time with her young son, J.C.
1986
Sam reopens Shapes Salon in Fairfax Station, Virginia, financially backed by a former Washington Redskin.
1988
Sam opens a second location in nearby Herndon, Virginia.
1990
Sam buys out her financial partner’s share of the business, which was their agreed-upon plan from the beginning.
1993
Sam’s husband Tony joins her management team full-time after spending three years behind the scenes managing Shapes books after hours while juggling the responsibilities of his daytime job.
1996
Sam’s son, J.C. Zerega graduates from Mississippi State University with a degree in business and becomes general manager of Shapes Herndon.
1996
Sam and Tony research the day spa industry across the country, noting what features would succeed in the Northern Virginia market.
1996
Construction begins on the Herndon salon to convert it into a true day spa equipped with full water services.
September 1997
After a full year of construction, the Herndon location is transformed into a magnificent Grecian-themed 4,000 sq. foot facility decorated with detailed hand painted murals.

Washingtonian Magazine recognizes Shapes as a ”Cutting Edge Salon and Spa” and one of Washington’s “Top Salons and Day Spas.”
